Well starting from the outside and going in you need the following.

Power cord
Chassis
power supply
disk drives
hard disk
graphics card
audio card (If your motherboard doesn't have audio on its chipset)
Cooling system (Most commonly fan and heat sync) for your processor
processor

btw, I forgot to list the RAM XD

RE: I need help building a computer
I'll make a comprehensible list.
First, all the basics like a monitor, a keyboard, and a mouse are needed.

Case
This is where all your parts will be stored. It usually comes with a set of fans and such.

Motherboard
This is a large, flat piece of electronics that will have all your stuff plugged into it. Think "mothership". Everything is connected to it, and it's basically the base of operations.

Processor/CPU
This is for managing tasks on your computer. Small and expensive.

Hard disk
This is basically where you store all your files. Usually with a lot of space, as opposed to SSDs, which sacrifice space for speed.

Disk Drive
Used to read disks (CDs and DVDs)
Not essential after you install your operating system, so if you're strapped for cash you might want to consider just borrowing one momentarily from a friend.

Power supply unit (PSU)
Basically the link between the socket and your parts. Distributes power to the rest of the components.

Memory/RAM
Basically how much physical memory your computer can work with.
NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH DISK SPACE

Graphics card/Video Card
Basically what manages the video feed (what goes to your monitor).
You'll probably need one unless you plan on just leaving it on without using it for anything (like if you wanted to dedicate it to hosting a server only).
(You might get an integrated graphics card with your motherboard or CPU, but those are rarely any good for anything).

You'll probably not need a sound card, as it comes with most motherboards nowadays.
Remember to make all of these parts COMPATIBLE with each other. That means that they work together. Make sure they have the same socket, and so on.
You might want to add additional things, but this is what you'll most likely need

RE: I need help building a computer
Yeah basically what marsh said.

If you're using the PC primarily for gaming, you should probably prioritize your Gfx card, RAM, and maybe the processor.
Disk drives can be as shitty or non-existent as you want, basically everything is downloadable now anyway.
If you use WiFi, you should invest in a wireless card too.
If you do but don't have the dosh for one, seriously ethernet cables are like $10 for a 20 foot lead.

Most importantly, make sure everything is compatible before you go out buying parts.
