It's quite obvious that we are not alone due the sheer size of the universe. I mean how unlikely is it that earth is the only planet that could have life on it. I follow this science thing on facebook and it comes up at least once a month with a new "earth like" planet.

Nope space is too vast for there not to be an exact copy with everything the same, it is literally impossible for there not to be at least one solar system the exact same in every way

If you think about it on a larger scale, if we have a copy so do they.
Our Earth has a copy, that earth has a copy, that earth has a copy, that earth has a copy. Then, there must also be an exact copy of the universe, and a copy of that universe. This probably doesn't make any sense, but whatever.

I posted this as somewhat of a joke, I hope that more sources come out later to confirm/ deny this.

It's not "scientifically impossible" that another earth just like this doesn't exist, you're getting it wrong. I can't remember exactly how big but there has been some calculations done and at some point if the universe is big enough the chance of the atoms forming something that's exactly like you can happen.

However the observable universe isn't even close to being that big and I don't think the rest of it is either although I don't know.

I do agree though that it's pretty likely that at least some form of life exists somewhere in the universe simply because it's so big.

The problem is The Fermi Paradox:

-The Sun is a young star. There are billions of stars in the galaxy that are billions of years older;
-Some of these stars likely have Earth-like planets which, if the Earth is typical, may develop intelligent life;
-Presumably some of these civilizations will develop interstellar travel, as Earth seems likely to do;
-At any practical pace of interstellar travel, the galaxy can be completely colonized in just a few tens of millions of years.

Since there exists billions of galaxies and billions and billions of stars etc the fact that someone hasn't developed interstellar travel and come visited us or at least made some form of contact is very strange.

Meh- Steven Hawkings declared that while aliens exist, we will most likely never get to see interstelar travel. To reach other inhabitable planets alive, one would have to move faster than the laws of physics allow.

Unless the aliens live 900 years and can travel way over the speed of light, we should be fine.

Theoretically, under the assumption that the universe is endless, sure.
They already calculated the approximate size of the universe though.
However under another assumption; that earth will stay this way and last forever (which it won't), it's theoretically possible for there to be an identical planet somewhere sometime. That's given infinite time, though.
